Easy Homemade Flour Tortilla Recipe

Homemade Tortilla Recipe

Homemade tortillas are super easy to make at home using staple pantry ingredients. I love making them whenever I’m out of store-bought flour tortillas. All you need is some butter (or leftover bacon grease), flour, salt, baking powder, and water. Easy peasy!

If you have a tortilla press, awesome! Your tortillas will be very uniform and perfect in shape and thickness. If not, you can roll these tortillas by hand (like I do). I use a rolling pin to roll out the dough. The result isn’t always perfect. Sometimes, they are irregular in shape, but they still taste amazing.

You can eat these delicious tortillas alone (they’re so delicious without anything), but you can also stuff them with fajita meat and vegetables, taco meat, or with cheese for quesadillas. I ate mine with a spread of peanut butter, and it was so yummy. (We also made fajitas with them later).

They don’t last very long in our house. There’s nothing better than warm tortillas straight from the pan. Yummy, yummy!

Easy Homemade Flour Tortilla Recipe

This easy recipe for homemade flour tortillas is soft and warm, so comforting. It uses pantry staples everyone has – lard (or butter), flour, baking powder, salt, and water.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Resting Time 30 minutes
Total Time 55 minutes
Servings 8 tortillas

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup lard (leftover bacon grease)
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

Making the Dough

  • In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the lard. Use a pastry blender to work it into the flour.
(Coating the flour with as much fat as possible helps prevent gluten formation, which makes the tortillas easier to roll out.)
  • Add the hot water and mix to bring the dough together.
  • Turn the dough out on a floured counter and knead it until the dough forms a ball. The consistency should be smooth and elastic.
It should not be sticky. If it's too sticky, knead in a little bit more flour.
  • Divide the tortilla dough into 8 equal pieces. Separate the pieces. Flatten them with your hand. Cover them with a kitchen towel and allow to rest for 30 minutes.

Preheat a Cast Iron Skillet

  • While the dough is resting, place a greased cast iron skillet into the oven. Turn on the oven to 400° F.
Leave in the oven until you're ready to fry.

Roll Out the Dough

  • Uncover one piece of dough at a time. Knead it for a minute. Roll it into a circle with the palm of your hands. Then using a rolling pin, flatten and roll it out. You want to roll it as thin as possible.
You can also use your hands and pull at the edges to thin it out.
(If the dough is too thick, you'll end up with a thick tortilla.)
  • Set aside and repeat with the other pieces.

Frying the Tortillas

  • Remove the cast iron skillet from the oven. Over medium heat, fry the tortilla in the hot skillet. (Do not add oil). When the tortilla develops a few bubbles, flip it over. You'll fry for about 30 seconds on each side.
Place the cooked tortilla on a plate. Cover with a clean kitchen towel to prevent it from drying out.
Repeat until all the tortillas are cooked.
  • If you aren't eating immediately, allow the tortillas to cool. Then wrap tightly in plastic wrap or place in a plastic ziplock bag. Store in the fridge.
    Enjoy!

Notes

You can substitute the lard with butter. (But I highly recommend using leftover bacon grease. You’ll get a better flavor.)
